Acoustic Landmarks and Prosodic Asymmetries

چکیده
The CV transition (or PIVOT) is an area at which the maximum of new spectral information coincides with rapidly rising intensity. These acoustic characteristics of PIVOTs are among the most salient events in speech [1,2]. It has been shown [3] that spectral changes whose response in the auditory nerve is predominantly an onset of firing (like in the CV transition) are much more perceptually salient than those producing an offset [4]. The auditory salience of the acoustic event at the transition to the vowel has been described as an ideal mark for the synchronization of the segmental and the prosodic stream [5, 2]. Indeed research on the perception of pitch [6] and duration [7] underscores the role of the PIVOT. In this study I argue that PIVOT is a landmark for articulatory phasing as well. In the acoustic investigation of CCV and VCC stopclusters in Polish I show that PIVOT is impervious to gestural overlap. The fact that there are no significant differences in transitions between CV and CCV syllables shows that speech rate is implemented as temporal compression (higher articulatory STIFFNESS) and not as gestural overlap in initial clusters. It is suggested that the implementation of the articulatory STIFFNESS parameter is dependent on the auditory salience restrictions and that it is highly correlated with the PIVOT.

Language users benefit from special phonetic tools in order to communicate linguistic information as well as different emotional aspects and paralinguistic information through daily conversation. Having functions in conveying semantic information to listeners, prosodic features form the essential part of linguistic behavour, manipulating them potentially can play an important role in transmitt...
متن کاملThe effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients
Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...
متن کاملPersian Phone Recognition Using Acoustic Landmarks and Neural Network-based variability compensation methods
Speech recognition is a subfield of artificial intelligence that develops technologies to convert speech utterance into transcription. So far, various methods such as hidden Markov models and artificial neural networks have been used to develop speech recognition systems. In most of these systems, the speech signal frames are processed uniformly, while the information is not evenly distributed ...
متن کاملWord stress in Tashlhiyt - Post lexical prominence in disguise?
This paper reports on a study of lexical and postlexical prominence asymmetries in Tashlhiyt Tamazight (Berber), a language that is renowned for its typologically rare prosodic structures. Carrier phrases were designed to elicit the presence or absence of a postlexical tone on the target word. Contrary to previous reports on the language, measures of acoustic durations and intensity reveal no c...
متن کاملAn Acoustic Study of Emotivity-Prosody Interface in Persian Speech Using the Tilt Model
This paper aims to explore some acoustic properties (i.e. duration and pitch amplitude of speech) associated with three different emotions: anger, sadness and joy against neutrality as a reference point, all being intentionally expressed by six Persian speakers. The primary purpose of this study is to find out if there is any correspondence between the given emotions and prosody patterning in P...
